Praintings

Mixed Media Art

I have a fun idea for you this week.

Let’s say you made a face you love. You’ve taken a photo of it. Now how do you incorporate it into new art? Make a Prainting!

Here is my face printed out. I won’t leave it this way though, even though it looks good. Not only will adding colored pencil over the top will make the paper stronger when it’s glued down with matte medium, but will feel more like original art than a print. The end result will look better.

I added mostly browns to deepen the shadows. Light pinks in the highlighted areas. The face looks warmer now. Glue it down with matte medium. You can use colored pencils after it’s glued down but it must be dried thoroughly or the paper will tear. Coat the canvas with streaks of tar gel.

Now we can play. Tar gel dries pretty quickly. I dripped magenta alcohol inks for an unexpected burst of color. And dribbled in blue watercolor to suggest hair. Red acrylic paint was added to the lips.

I cut the shape of her hair with white which gave it a more interesting composition.

Lastly I covered the face with Cold Wax Medium to create a layer that is clear but textured. And embedded little stars.

Starting with a print is so good for creative freedom because you’ll be more likely to experiment.

Thank you to my paid subscribers who keep this art blog going!

Happy Prainting! I’d love to see what you come up with.
